Houses 1 and 2: Lucy in the Sky
Fellenbergstrasse residential and commercial development, Zurich, Switzerland, 2010–2016

The two long buildings on Fellenbergstrasse are the first two of five houses we have built – or are building – for the GEWOBAG cooperative. A typical task for today's demands on urban housing construction in Zurich: To create a maximum of high-quality and yet affordable living space – on a busy street and on a plot of land that is very demanding in terms of building law.

Our project solves the problem with two elongated houses that accompany the street space with a horizontally structured façade. Despite the restrictions that street noise exerts on the floor plan design, it was possible to create a self-confident architectural expression of the urban space using a number of tricks.

On the garden side, the two houses react with cubic staggering to the small-scale urban grain of the neighbourhood. In addition to the compactly cut apartments, the very dynamic roof landscape creates an impressive number of attic apartments which, in accordance with the cooperative's wishes, provide high-quality living space.
