Right, man? Schlieren, Switzerland, 2015-2020

A swarm of six houses – we are building three of them – forms this new part of town on the outskirts of Schlieren, located in the periphery of Zurich. Our friends, the architects Haerle Hubacher from Zurich, provided the best urban design for the swarm.

 

The narrow residential house reacts to constraints of noise protection, drawing its strength from an exposed position along the railway tracks. It appears long and slim – with a laid-back depth of space, dynamic floor plans, large balconies on one side and a majestic façade to the railway. A "simple" structure? Surprise: Balcony partitions like Schiller curls, balustrades like loudspeakers' membranes. Spiral staircases to the courtyard. A strong green colour scheme follows Haerle Hubacher's colour concept.

The yellow house on the street blocks the noise with a bulky balcony layer of in-situ concrete. The high railings and the robust gallows construction made of concrete wall panels are owed to the noise and the constructive efficiency. They shape the defensive expression of the house and give the apartments a surprising spatial cosiness, reminiscent of living by the patio. The remarkable depth of the structure turns into a design-determining factor for the materialization and colour scheme.
