Housing estate Sun (Sonne), Emmenbrücke, Switzerland, 2019–2024

The four polygonal houses offer around 180 rental and condominium apartments. Together with the existing buildings, they gather around a central, semi-public open space. This permeable, quite open settlement structure creates added value for the population by linking the square with the surrounding area and the neighbourhood – one of the basic ideas of the project.

Another idea was to align apartments on all sides – despite the busy and noisy road. This is how we do it: projecting, partly double-storey loggias adsorb the noise and characterise the façades.

The façade structure shows a strong horizontal division. The two upper floors are separated from the lower ones by two-storey loggias. The different colours and materials of the façades made of folded panels are an integral part of the design in order to differentiate the very similar houses from each other.

Inside, the apartments are characterised by flowing room sequences, diverse room references and numerous corner locations. The stairwells are spacious and naturally lit, they promote communal living and support a lively neighbourhood.
